IT Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has announced the inclusion of AIOU students in PM Laptop scheme 2024. PM Laptop scheme for AIOU students will be started this year. Federal Government has decided to give free laptops among the AIOU and virtual university students. Prime Minister Laptop Scheme 2024 will be available for students of such universities. Before that, AIOU and Virtual University students were not able to participate in PM laptop scheme for AIOU students. Soon Allama Iqbal Open University will make policy about this scheme.
PM Laptop Scheme for AIOU Students
Minister Siddiqui assured the National Assembly that the inclusion of AIOU students in the scheme is under consideration. He emphasized that while a final decision is still pending, the government is committed to making sure that AIOU students are part of the program.
AIOU Laptop Scheme 2024
The Minister highlighted that the PM’s Laptop Scheme, which began in 2013, has previously benefitted students from AIOU and Virtual University, distributing over 10,000 laptops in total. Although AIOU students received laptops during the 2015-16 distribution, the 2022-23 allocation was redirected to students in Balochistan as decided by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

Shahida Begum, in her notice, underscored the significant financial challenges faced by many AIOU students, particularly those from remote and underprivileged areas like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. She stressed the crucial role of laptops for students, especially those pursuing PhD and MPhil programs, in their research activities. She urged that these students be prioritized in the forthcoming distribution of laptops.

The Minister acknowledged these concerns and reassured that they will be taken into account in the decision-making process for the upcoming distribution of laptops.
